A Jāņi Pole is an essential part of Latvian Summer Solstice celebrations to this day.
We haven't worked out the details yet, but what are we thinking?
It will be like our Winter Dance Party, but outdoors and with the flavor of Summer Solstice traditions.
We'll build a bonfire; perhaps we'll jump over the bonfire! We'll make oak leaf and wildflower garlands and headwreaths (i.e., vainags in Latvian, vinok in Ukrainian, etc.). There'll be live music, dancing and much merriment!
Summer Solstice is still celebrated in many countries in Eastern Europe. In Latvia it is known as Jāņi and is the biggest summer holiday of the year, something like the American Fourth of July celebrations in scale. In Russia, Belarusia, Ukraine and Poland it is known as some variant of the name Ivan Kupalo (Russian: Иван-Купала; Belarusian: Купалле; Ukrainian: Івана Купала; Polish: Noc Kupały or Noc Świętojańska).
Start researching the Summer Solstice traditions specific to your own heritage to share with us at the party, and please! Write about them to us here:

The Gateway to India
Mumbai is one of the most populous cities in the world. It was built across seven islands & was controlled by various empires before the arrival of the first Europeans, the Portuguese. Control ultimately passed to the British who, beginning in the late 18th century, reshaped the city in a series of large-scale civil engineering projects. Under British control, Mumbai emerged as India’s most important center of commerce. Today, it is home to such institutions as the Reserve Bank of India & the National Stock Exchange of India, as well as numerous Indian and multinational corporations. In 1885 the first session of the Indian National Congress ("the Congress Party") was held in Mumbai, and in the 20th century Mumbai was a strong base of support for the Indian independence movement. The city is also the home of Bollywood, India’s film and TV industry. See our Indian suite in PORTS of CALL!
